Absa boss on results
Absa CEO Steve Booysen talks to the company's latest set of solid results and how important branding is in growing your customer base.

Absas controlling shareholder, Barclays, reporting a sharp rise in bad debts. They surged to more than a billion pounds in the first half of the year, it is an increase of 50 percent. Particularly relevant is the fact that Barclay card customers are struggling to repay their credit card bills and it is relevant and I will explain why in a moment.
The Barclays results shows that 50 percent of its profits comes from outside the UK and ten percent of its total profits are generated by Absa, the company of course which it bought round about this time last year. Welcome to Steve Booysen, the chief executive officer of Absa.
Your problems
I contacted British Gas in January and have phoned five times since to tell them our electricity bill had been based on the wrong reading. In March I was assured the fault would be corrected within a month, but in May the bill still showed that we owed £726. Now British Gas says if we don't pay in seven days it will send the account to a debt collection agency and may result in a court judgment. I grew up in China and have no experience of dealing with such an issue in this country.

Sorry, we made a mistake, says British Gas. Somehow the readings got skewed and your bill was completely wrong. It has recalculated the amount based on the correct readings, which show you owe £19.92. To apologise, it has written this debt off. You do not have to pay British Gas anything.

Is this not the perfect marriage of ancient and modern? There is now a website that compares petrol prices at your local filling stations. This modern development is a breakthrough for ancient, or at least older, people, they being the only ones who care about petrol prices. Until now, for example, my parents-in-law have had to drive all around Hampshire in search of the cheapest petrol: they have a theory that the nearer you get to Portsmouth the lower the prices. Such is their obsession they've been known to drive miles out of their way, if necessary into the next county, just to save a few pence by filling up at a cheaper pump.
