Bank Bus brings advice to neighborhoods

The BB&T Inc. banking chain reached out to an unlikely constituency on Friday: people without much money who have probably never owned a home.

In an outreach mission of sorts, the Winston-Salem, N.C.-based company rolled a city-style bus into a Roanoke neighborhood with a public-housing project and offered up experts on borrowing.

Dubbed the "Bank Bus," the 40-foot vehicle, equipped with a mobile satellite dish and computer workstations, is making stops in a number of Roanoke neighborhoods including the Jamestown Place public housing complex. The goal: to help educate low- and middle-income families about the possibilities of home ownership.

Of course this effort isn't one of pure altruism. In a home-lending market where interest rates are up and real estate brokers are fretting about a possible sales slowdown, the search for new buyers is on.
