Volkswagen 2Q Profit More Than Doubles

BERLIN -- Volkswagen AG saw its second-quarter net profit more than double, boosted by a gain from the sale of its Europcar rental unit, the automaker said Thursday.

Wolfsburg-based VW, which has been entangled in a series of corruption scandals just as it battles to cut costs, earned euro859 million ($1.08 billion) in the second quarter of 2005, up from euro333 million in the same period of the previous year. The figures beat analysts' predictions of euro824 million ($1.04 billion).

Northwest Airlines 2Q loss widens

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) - Northwest Airlines Corp., which has been operating under bankruptcy protection, posted a wider second-quarter loss Monday as its restructuring costs mount. But its executives pointed to promising developments in their plans to cut labor and pension costs.

After paying dividends on preferred stock, losses totaled $285 million US, or $3.27 per share, for the three months ended June 30. That compared with losses of $234 million, or $2.69 per share, in the prior-year quarter.

Excluding the cost of restructuring and other one-time items, Northwest, the fifth-largest U.S. airline, said it earned $179 million versus a loss of $288 million last year.

Revenue edged higher to $3.29 billion from $3.2 billion in the prior-year period.

Aftermarket Movers: Adobe Backs 3Q

NEW YORK (AP) - Adobe Systems Inc. shares rose after the closing bell Tuesday after the design-software firm backed its fiscal third-quarter profit outlook on continued projections for strong sales of its flagship products.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company said it continues to expect a profit of 13 cents to 16 cents per share on revenue of $580 million to $610 million. Excluding items, operating profit is seen between 25 cents and 27 cents per share.
